Compress images on your Mac

Squash is an image compressor for Mac that shrinks, resizes and converts whole batches of photos in one go. Drop in a folder, pick a format and a quality, and Squash exports every image with a smaller file size and a look you can check side by side with the original.

It’s made for the image jobs you repeat: optimising photos for a website, turning iPhone HEIC files into JPGs, resizing a client shoot, or watermarking product shots. Save the settings as a preset and the next batch takes one click.

Export WebP and AVIF for faster websites

Give your website less to load. Convert to WebP or AVIF, set a maximum width and compress the lot, so pages open sooner on every device and score better on Core Web Vitals.

Convert HEIC photos to JPG on your Mac

iPhone photos arrive as HEIC files that websites, clients and older apps can’t open. Squash converts a whole album to JPG in one batch, with the size and quality you choose.

  1. Drop in your HEIC photos. Drag them from Photos, Finder or an SD card, one file or a whole folder.

  2. Choose JPEG and a quality. Add a maximum size if you want them smaller, and decide which metadata to keep.

  3. Click Squash. Every photo is converted on your Mac, nothing is uploaded, and the originals stay untouched unless you say otherwise.

Squash vs ImageOptim and online image compressors

Free tools are fine for one file. Squash is for the day you have two hundred, and for photos you’d rather not upload to a stranger’s server.

ImageOptim is a good free choice when all you need is lossless optimisation. Squash is the step up when you also need to resize, convert and automate.

Squash questions, answered

Formats, batch work, automation and how to get started with Squash on your Mac.

Formats and conversion

Squash exports JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, TIFF and JPEG XL. Pick the format that suits where your images are going, then fine-tune the quality and compare the result with the original in the split view.

Squash imports JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, PSD, TIFF, HEIC and HEIF, WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL, DNG and camera RAW files such as CR3, NEF and ARW, plus any other image format macOS can open. RAW support varies by camera model and macOS version.

Squash converts HEIC to JPG in one batch: add the photos, choose JPEG as the export format, set the quality and click Squash. Preview can export a single HEIC file as JPEG, but for a whole album, Squash is quicker and lets you resize and strip location data at the same time.

Squash exports both, so try each on your own images. WebP is supported everywhere and offers lossy and lossless modes with transparency. AVIF usually makes smaller files at the same quality and is now supported by every major browser, so it’s a good default for photos.

Squash lets you decide. Choose a quality level, then drag the before and after slider to check the result at full zoom before you export. Most photos can lose 70 to 90 percent of their file size with no visible change.

Batch work and automation

Yes. Squash resizes a whole folder at once: set a width, height, percentage or maximum size and every image in the batch comes out to match, with its aspect ratio kept. Smart Crop can frame the subject for you when you need a fixed shape.

No. Squash runs entirely on your Mac, so your photos never leave it. There is no server, no account and no file-size limit. Smart Rename and Smart Crop use Apple Intelligence and the Vision framework on your Mac.

Yes. Save any combination of format, quality, size, rename pattern, watermark and metadata settings as a preset in Squash, then apply it to the next batch in one click. Presets also drive watched folders and Shortcuts.

Yes. Point a watched folder at a Squash preset and anything you drop into it is converted with those settings. Squash also appears in Apple’s Shortcuts app, so you can build image jobs into your own workflows.

ImageOptim is a free app that makes existing files smaller, mostly without changing pixels. Squash does that too, and also resizes, converts between formats, renames, watermarks, edits metadata, applies filters and saves presets. If you only ever need lossless optimisation, ImageOptim is a good choice. If you prepare images for the web, clients or shops, Squash does the whole job.

Getting started

Yes, Squash is free to use with a daily export limit. The free version is the full app, with no watermark: you can export 25 images on your first day and 5 a day after that, and the count resets at midnight. Buy a licence from the Realmac store to remove the limit and unlock Watched Folders. It’s a one-time purchase, not a subscription, and you keep the version you bought forever.

In Squash, each image you save, drag out, copy or export through Shortcuts counts as one export. Previews, size estimates, Describe and changing settings don’t count. If a batch is bigger than what’s left for the day, Squash offers to export the first few now and the rest once you buy a licence.

Yes, both. Squash is sold directly from Realmac, on the Mac App Store, and as part of a Setapp subscription. Buy direct or from the App Store and you own your licence with no ongoing cost. Already on Setapp? Install Squash through the Setapp app.

Squash requires macOS Sonoma 14.6 or later. Features that use Apple Intelligence, such as Smart Rename, need a Mac that supports Apple Intelligence.
